4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. Nehemiah 1:4 I think we all have a tendency to react when situations arise and that is never the best way to make a decision. One thing that has taken me a long time to learn is that the most immediate option is not always the best option. Im pretty resilient and flexible (not physically) so I can just jump from situation to situation and just keep going. You learn to do that when you live with someone with severe health issues and mental disabilities, but this verse has been stuck in my mind for the past few weeks. Nehemiah received some devastating news and because of his job and responsibilities, he saw no way that he could help. Look at what it says he didnt do...... He didnt run away from his responsibilities saying I have a higher calling. He didnt say I cant do anything because of my responsibilities. He took some time to think and then he fasted and prayed.... for some days. If a house is on fire, you dont take a few days to pray about it, you do what you have to do, but lets face it, most of the things we think of as emergencies can wait a few days while we pray and seek Gods advice. There is an old saying that goes when God closes a door, look for a window. That is not the way Christians should live. That is looking for a way around Gods will and trying to solve the problem ourselves. When God closes a door.....wait for Him to open the next one. By the way. Waiting is not inactivity
