4 days until Pioneer Day! In 1854, my ancestors Mary and William Chittenden were baptized in Australia. They later emigrated to the U.S. with their youngest of 14 children, my ancestor. The parents couldnt afford to pay passage for their (mostly grown) kids, and left them with siblings. This youngest daughter didnt want to be left, and jumped into the bay and followed the ship for several HOURS. After a near drowning, the captain agreed to let her come aboard without paying passage.
