40 years ago on this day, February 18th, 1974, the Miramichi and St. Thomas University mourned the sudden and tragic death of a beloved and well loved priest and scholar, Reverend Father Edmund Joseph Casey, at St. Thomas University, Fredericton, New Brunswick, at the age of 45. Born in Barnaby River, New Brunswick on March 1st, 1928, the son of Jeremiah and Mary Ethel (Foley) Casey. Brother of Clarence Casey, Warren Casey, Margaret Gallant, Marie Maloney, Clayton Casey, Leonard Casey, Eileen McKiel, Cleo Casey, Teresa Casey, Patricia Daley, Martin Casey and Angeline McLean (my paternal grandmother). Father Edmund was ordained on May 8, 1953, at Saint Michaels the Archangel Basilica Roman Catholic Church, Chatham, by Bishop Camille-Andre LeBlanc of the Diocese of Bathurst, along with Reverend Father Robert Anthony Grattan ( Born July 31st, 1928, Covedell, New Brunswick, - Died May 3rd, 1999, Miramichi, New Brunswick, ) and Reverend Monsignor George William Martin ( Born September 21st, 1924, Chatham, New Brunswick, Died March 2nd, 2009, Saint John, New Brunswick). Upon that, he taught High School and in 1956, obtained in his Bachelor of Education from Saint Thomas University. Monsignor George Martin pointed to this early teaching experience at the school level as a key to his later success in reaching university students. He had an ability to extensively connect with them. He went on to receive his doctorate in Sociology while teaching at Saint Thomas University and later served as the chair of the department of Social Sciences. He was playing a game of handball at the time of his sudden and tragic death. On February 26th, 1974, it was moved at a general faculty meeting that the Board of Governors be petitioned to rename the academic building in his memory. In May of 1974 that building was renamed it holds to this day. Rest in Peace - Et in terra
