40 years ago today Genesis released their landmark concept album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. 6 years after that, I heard it for the first time, and my entire idea of what good music should be was shattered. I had never heard such unusual melodies, strange but wonderful sounds, ever changing moods, accompanied by fascinating lyrics. I loved everything about the album. The cover art, the wonderful narrative written by Peter Gabriel that accompanied, and explained the downright unusual, but awesome lyrics, and of course the music was like nothing I had ever heard before. The power of songs like Back in N.Y.C, In the Cage, and Lilywhite Lilith, still give me an adrenaline rush today. The absurd playfulness of songs like The Colony of Slippermen, Here Comes the Supernatural Anaesthetist, and The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging still make me smile. The amazing musicianship on songs like Ride the Scree, and The Chamber of 32 Doors still give me the chills, and the downright awesomeness of songs like The Lamia, Fly on a Windshield, and The Carpet Crawlers keep this album in my weekly iPod play list rotation. This album also opened up the doors to other early Genesis albums for me to discover like buried treasure, and made me a lifelong fan of the band, and all the members, and their solo efforts as well. If you have never heard this album before, I invite you to listen to it, and open up your ears and mind. You wont be sorry. To give you a little taste, (or reminder if you are a fan, but havent listened to it in a while I offer the song below. I absolutely love the lyrics of both parts. The wind is blowing harder now, Blowing dust into my eyes. The dust settles on my skin, Making a crust I cannot move in And Im hovering like a fly, waiting for the windshield on the freeway. Enjoy.
