#41. Suspiria (1977). I was lucky to see Suspiria on the big screen at the Nuart Theater in the early 80s for the first time. The widescreen anamorphic print was excellent, and the vivid Technicolors beyond my wildest expectations in terms of graphic impact. The eerie, whispering, non-abating score by Goblin made this one of the scariest, most edge-of-your-seat horror films Ive ever had the sweaty-palmed pleasure to endure, a true nerve wracker. Years later, I would have the extreme good fortune to have Jessica Harper attend our wedding, and dance with her. I told her how much I loved this film then, and I recall she was (perhaps) a bit mystified by the outpouring, given she has worked with so many equally talented directors but of perhaps more renown. But I meant it, every word, then and now. Shes incandescent as the perfect realization of the classical ingenue Suzy Bannion, and brings a vulnerability to her every shot that is not easily forgotten. Argento uses design as effortlessly for suspense as Kubrick later did in his own study in red in The Shining. While waiting once for the debut screening of Colors in LA later I also had good fortune, noticing Dario Argento standing in line, unrecognized by any one else. I immediately approached him and bombarded him with praise, especially for Suspiria. He was overwhelmed, not the least of all because his English speaking skills were clearly limited (but superior to my non-existent Italian, I should fairly note). But Ill never forget the way he beamed when I spoke of this film. Ah, yes... Suspiria! he managed, mightily grinning. If you have never seen it, and you can at least watch it HD and on a large screen, with truly great stereo, then you are, my friends, in for a terror-filled treat. An incredible achievement in horror filmmaking, imho. #41 of my Halloween Horrorfest. A reverse countdown of my favorite (not necessarily critically regarded as The Best) horror films, one for each day until Halloween, in no particular order.
