45 years ago tonight in San Francisco: 20-year-old New Jersey singer/songwriter Bruce Springsteen and his heavy rock band Steel Mill played The Matrix, having been hired to open for Boz Scaggs. They had been auditioning for Bill Graham and lucked into this gig, particularly because San Francisco Examiner music critic Phillip Elwood came to report on the headliner but ultimately devoted almost all of his story to the Springsteen band. “I have never been so overwhelmed by an unknown band,” he wrote, giving particular attention to Springsteen’s songwriting and the song “Lady Walking Down By The River”. It IS a good one (and the second track here). They closed with a big “Turn On Your Lovelight”.
