A large number of dead too have been receiving the grant! Of the 16,305 cases verified so far in the district, 7,530 (about 46 per cent) did not fulfil the eligibility criterion, said sources. The figure is learnt to be the highest in any district of Punjab. As many as 474 beneficiaries have died long ago, but their pension was still being disbursed, meaning it was reaching wrong hands, they said. Another 653 were not living on addresses given in the pension list. The data, accessed from government sources, showed that the maximum fake beneficiaries (3,173) in the district were found in Malout sub-division. Muktsar sub-division is next to follow with 2,520 fake cases while Gidderbaha has 1,837. The data shows that 5,821 beneficiaries (nearly 36 per cent) have been found to be ineligible for old age pension due to their lower age. As many as 247 beneficiaries fall short of the norms meant for low-income pension whereas 335 persons are not eligible for the landless pension scheme. As of now, only 28 per cent pension cases have been verified while scrutiny of the remaining 42,135 was yet to be conducted. The task of verification lies with Sub-Divisional Magistrates, who have assigned it further to tehsildars and other subordinate staff. A retired official who earlier served in the district administration on a senior position blamed political pressure for the illegal activity. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Capt (retd) Karnail Singh said, “The verification process is going on and any comment can be made only once that is complete….
