#49 The next morning we had to go for umabo ceremony (dowry being given to the grooms family from the the wife’s family) at lindani’s parents home. Since we slept some time during the hours of the morning we overslept, we woke up to the sound of sandile’s phone ringing, “hello” he answered half asleep, I got up and went to the bathroom. When I came out sandile was already on his feet, sandile:”good morning baby” me:”morning” we kissed, me:”what time is it?” sandile:”09:55 we have about 15 minutes to get ready if we want to make it on time” we took a quick shower, got dressed into our traditional gear and left without having had breakfast. I did the finishing touches on myself in the car, we got to lindani’s home a few minutes after 10:40. According to the day’s schedule we were late but on our African watch we were 90 minutes early. It was partly cloudy in the morning when we woke up but by lunch time it was cloudy and a bit chilly, so the weather forced the families to do everything quickly since the programmed delayed. By 14:00 we were having lunch and the cold was unbearable, I excused myself from the table sandile and I shared with some of their friends circle. Most of the guys were either married or in a serious relationship, there was one who stood out from the rest Penuel. He was not yet married had recently bought a house in Westville, and an Audi TT coupe for weekend and an range rover sport, was earning six figures per month and ‘lived the life most people dream of’those were his exact words. He was boasting about his life and his 3 children from different mothers and how his girlfriend has remained by his side. His girlfriend nomfundo was just like him, we got to hear about her monthly shopping sprees in Paris and New York. So the day was all about them. When someone else spoke they would cut you off without thinking twice. I only wished that their ‘fortune’ as penuel would say, would buy them some manners and humility. Anyway I excused myself and went to get my coat from the car and I was in no hurry to get back so I called my inlaws to check on the kids. I sent sandile a text to tell him that will be in the car for a while. Some 30 minutes later I got out of the car and while I was fixing my self up nicely before heading back to the marquee, “lethu is that you?” I turned to see who it was, “oh my it is you. you know I saw you yesterday during the church service but when we got out I had to hurry home and I didn’t get the chance to see if it was really you I was seeing” he hugged me “how have you been? I still cant believe its you. I’ve been trying to get hold of you for years” me:”tjo wandile that was a mouthful” wandile:”I know, I just cant believe im seeing you in the flesh after so long” wandile is a handsome lawyer I had a brief fling with after the collapse of my relationship with ray. xoli and I were coming from the mall when a silver gray BMW 7 series went past from the opposite direction, then it turned and we hadn’t realised that it did until the driver of that car ran to us and asked for our numbers. Xoli gave them hers, my phone had died a sudden death leaving me phoneless for about 2 weeks. The driver introduced himself as Bayanda and he was with his brother wandile. They were both very fair in complexion; one could easily mistake them for being coloured. Later that evening they had called and asked to see us, of which we agreed. We went out for a movie and later went to bayanda’s place to just chill before they took us back to our flat. From the minute we met it was clear that bayanda was interested in xoli and wandile and I were stuck together. there wasn’t much chemistry there but I enjoyed his company, he was working in bayanda’s law firm and being the under dog he was still trying to make his mark in the world. I was 22 and he was 27 he wanted a serious relationship and I wasn’t, our fling was so brief that it didn’t make it to a kiss. We would see each other after work and just talk. I think he could feel that we weren’t on the same page. As weeks went by we saw less of each other and months later I was with sanele and no other man existed until sandile came along…
