5:00 am Farm Report We went to the auction! People came from everywhere to help support the young farmers who were participating in this event. This was the night the kids had been waiting for. The night a years worth of work would have value in the market place. Prior to the auction, we had a chance to meet the young farmers and ask questions about their management of the livestock and their goals. Every lamb or steer had a sticker with a number assigned to it. Hanging on the wall were the costs associated with raising each animal. Everyone hoped to make back the costs, plus some extra. Of course. This is a drill for the real thing. Its what we do. I asked several what they thought set their animals apart from the others. Then, we sat down and waited for the auction to begin. The bidding was fast and furious. Thank goodness Rai could understand most of what was being said. In the end, we bought two high quality animals for the market. The money raised by each of the young farmers, after costs is being applied for the most part to their college funds. Nearly all the college age young people want to work with animals or in agriculture, after they graduate. Rai and I went to the auction specifically to support these young people and their futures as farmers. We hope some of you will feel the same. Our offer to you is that for the lamb, if purchased as a whole for freezer meat, every penny after our costs will be returned to the young farmer for her college fund. The same with the beef, with the exception that it doesnt need to be purchased as a whole side. We can offer that in quarters. Many of you may be familiar with this practice of stocking up for winter! If its too much meat for your household, then find a friend or a food bank to share it with. I will gladly help facilitate this. Come in to the market or call. I will be there for most of the day. Leave your name and phone number if I am not available. I will return your calls. This is your chance to support the future of farming. Im telling you, I was there. Theyre a terrific group of young people and they need our support. Thank you Frances Pendleton for doing such a great job as a farmer. I wish you and all the other young farmers a bright future in agriculture. We need you. It was an exciting night at the Union Fair! Im off to the barn. Ill be back later.
