5:14 am Farm Report Lucy has a job! From time to time Lucy - TopicsExpress

5:14 am Farm Report Lucy has a job! From time to time Lucy stands in front of the glass door. Mostly, she wants to go out. Sometimes she sits for long periods of time staring at the rooster on the other side of the glass. Ive seen him peck at the glass, her on the other side. Its no wonder she runs after him. Every so often, usually at night, she stares at the glass and growls. After enough times of looking out into the dark, I realized she sees her reflection. Its a definite image of a fine young black Labrador. Ive stopped going to the door. I can see her and her reflection. At 3:30 am. this morning, Lucy started howling and barking at the door. Sherman came running. I had just sat down to write. She was insistent. I let her out. Sherman walked out into the yard and inspected the chicken tractor. Lucy bolted off the deck and ran half way across the yard. Howling, barking, twirling and jumping. I could see nothing, but I was nervous. Nothing from Sherman. He trotted back inside. Lucy walked in with him. But as they approached the door to the house, Lucy suddenly spun around and began barking. This was not hyperactivity. This was a warning. I pushed her inside and listened. Crunch! Crunch! Something big was walking through the snow, just outside the fence. I couldnt see anything. But I knew it was the barnyard breaking out. I ran to get Rai. As we entered the yard, we could see a pair of beautiful Belgians walking along under the light of the stars. I took a second to appreciate this sight as I kept moving toward the barn. They would follow Rai. I would count Jersey faces and throw out more hay. The lines are down, here and there from the storm. Yesterday, no less than eight farmers told me tales of luring cattle home with a hay bale, one followed a pony and eventually confined it in a garage and there were a few tales of horse mischief. Yes indeed. Mischief. We were lucky the Jersey girls stayed in. This time. The fence was raised out of the snow and the line secured for the morning. The chores are done and my coffee is cold. But the livestock are in. For now. And what about Lucy. Well, I think Lucy found her job on the farm. If it hadnt been for her, I would only now have discovered the breakout. I would have been late to the barn, late getting the generator fired up this morning and late for work. I have to run, otherwise I will be late. Nice job, Lucy. Im off to the barn. Ill be back later.
