5 Questions That Decide If Facebook Crossed the Line - with its recent report about manipulating users emotions in the News Feed. Excellent post by Scott Berkun: scottberkun/2014/5-questions-if-facebook-crossed-the-line/ Even though all media is a manipulation of emotions, and marketers are constantly testing what works with their audiences, and the news feed has always been controlled by algorithms, Scott asks: ① Is it ethical to manipulate people’s behavior? ② Is it ethical to use design and experimental psychology to serve corporate goals? ③ Was there something wrong with explicit, rather than implicit, emotion research? ④ Was there something wrong in doing an experiment at this scale? ⑤ Was it unethical to publish the results in a research journal? Be sure to read Scott Berkuns post linked above for the full discussion. This report about Facebook messing with the news feed for a massive psychology experiment is certainly blowing up the media. Im not surprised. My own reaction was pretty strong! I instantly wondered a) was I one of the anonymous participants of the study?, b) just how much of my news feed content is being directly manipulated on a regular basis anyway, and c) what content am I missing - despite the daily use of all my Friend Lists, Interest Lists? Hmmm!! As you know, often the trust level between users and Facebook can easily be shaken and this report certainly caused a ruckus!
