5 SCHOOLS TO BE TYPHOON, QUAKE-RESISTANT Panay News, July 29, 2014 ILOILO – Five typhoon-ravaged schools in the island-barangays of Concepcion town will be made resistant to typhoons and earthquakes through the help of an international humanitarian organization. The reconstruction plan of Concern Worldwide will benefit the elementary schools of Barangays Polopiña, Salvacion, Igbon, Malangabang and Bagongon. The organization committed to retrofit a total of 32 classrooms and reconstruct 16 classrooms, according to Provincial Administrator Raul Banias. The new classrooms will be designed sturdy enough to withstand earthquakes and typhoons with wind speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour. Concern Worldwide is also active in helping the residents improve their utilization of ground water sources through the development of spring water catchments and wells. They currently have this project in barangays Igbon, Polopiña, Salvacion and Tambaliza. It was conceptualized after the island-barangays’ water system sustained serious damage due to super typhoon “Yolanda” (international name: Haiyan) November last year. The organization also taught the residents of Barangay Baliguian, also in Concepcion, to practice rain water harvesting in the day care center, primary school, health center and in their public plaza. Concern Worldwide is among the organizations that responded to province’s call for aid following the widespread devastation caused by the monster storm. Aside from their support in the reconstruction of typhoon-ravaged schools, Concern Worldwide also provided emergency shelter kits to 11,004 households in Concepcion and Carles. They also provided cash grants plus new motorized boats to affected fisher folk and launched coral reef replanting, mangrove reforestation and coconut farming restoration. (Jezza A.
