5 Simple Steps to Staying Organized Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, its not all mixed up. - Christopher Robin in Winnie the Pooh Getting your home organized can be difficult. Staying organized can be simple if you follow these five easy tips. 1. Dont Put it Down, Put it Away - This is the Golden Rule. It only takes a few extra seconds put put something away and will save you time in the long run. 2. Creating Files from Piles - Gather piles of papers, mail, etc. and designate a spot for it. Separate categories and set up filing systems for personal records, insurance policies, warranties and health information. 3. Create a Place for Everything - Find a logical place for things and keep be diligent about keeping things in their places. Take everything out of the area that isnt used for storage in that particular category. For example; Cooking, serving and eating items are kept in the kitchen. Camping cookware should be kept in a seasonal area or container in the basement, garage, etc., and be sorted by how often they are used. 4. Do a Seasonal Clean Sweep - Every season walk through your home, garage and basement with a collection bin. Collect items that should be thrown, donated, sold, repaired or placed in seasonal storage. Look at each item in your home and ask yourself; · is this useful or will it be in the near future · is this sentimental and important If you answered no to both of those questions, then you should probably throw, sell or donate the item. Repair items that are in need or repair and return them to their proper place. If youve see you have an item that has been in need of repair for a long period of time and you still havent fixed it, give yourself a deadline to repair it by. If you dont have it done by that deadline, get rid of it. You obviously didnt need it badly enough. 5. Become the Fashion Police - Every item in your closet should: · Fit Well · Be in Good Condition · Be in Style If you have items that are not all of the above, donate or sell them. If you tend to fluctuate weight then keep clothes that currently dont fit in a separate section or a separate closet. If you can enlist a friend to weed through items with you, it may help having another opinion of what looks fabulous, and what should hit the its gotta go box. 6. Create a Communication Area - Now-a-days, everyone has a busy schedule. We are wives, career women and moms, OR all three, We juggle our own schedules, and the schedules of everyone living with us. Create a spot where appointments, meetings, sporting activities, yoga schedules and even dog groomer appointments can be listed. This benefits everyone, providing access to each persons activities, and will lessen the chance of double booking times that are already committed. The purpose of organizing is to put your life in order, not to put your things in order. Organization helps create better day-to-day time management. It creates a more structured environment for you to live and work, resulting in more available time to do the things that matter most.
