5 simple steps to uncovering your unique God Given Talents _________________________________________________________________ What are your talents? More importantly, are you using them? We all have one or more talents. For the sake of this article I’m separating talents from what I consider abilities. Your abilities are something you learn, like how to cook or how to drive a car. Talents on the other hand, are God given and are our unique, individual gifts. If we use our talents for good we can live an amazing life. If we don’t, much like the servant in the Parable of the Talents story in the Bible (Matthew 25:14-30) who buried his talents, we might as well not have them at all. We will have missed out on one of the great gifts of life. A good example of having a special talent is my friend Larry. Larry has been in the excavating and landscape business for most of his life, aside from traveling the world racing motorcycles. One evening we were standing in my yard looking out at the woods. While I saw woods, Larry because one of his talents is being able to see the natural flow of the trees and the hidden beauty of the land, saw how the land could be made more attractive simply by cutting some trails and moving a few boulders around. This is a talent that comes naturally to him. His vision for our property is far greater than anything I could have come up with. It’s not one of my talents. I could probably learn it but it would never just “flow” like it does with Larry. Over the years I’ve discovered at least two of my own talents. One is, of course, writing. When I write the words just flow, there is no strain or struggle. Another gift I have is the ability to look at a small business and see opportunities where other’s don’t, much like Larry and the land. Of course I have also studied marketing, advertising, and business for three decades but it is my God given talent that enables me to help my clients grow their business. What about you? If you want to begin to uncover your talents, here are some ideas to help you get started: What is it that you easily do that other people have to work at? What do you do that other people compliment you on? What do you find yourself doing, just for the joy of it? What activities make it feel like time is just flying by? What would you do even if you were not paid for it? You have talents that were a part of you when you arrived here on planet earth. For example, aside from learning English grammar in elementary school, I have never taken a writing class in my life and probably never will. I’m not about to change something that’s working:-) I have learned, over the years, that as I recognize where my gifts come from and give thanks for them, I can just let life flow. When I sit down to write, I say a prayer and ask for guidance and it comes easily. If you want to live your life to it’s fullest take the time to explore and uncover your unique talents and, when you do, share them with the world. So . . . what are your talents?
