5-year-old got HIV in blood transfusion: who’s to blame? A 5-year-old #girl in China’s Fujian Province has tested #HIV positive and is suspected of having caught the virus from a #bloodtransfusion 4 years ago. But according to local authorities, it’s not the #medical staff’s responsibility. The girl, Maomao, received an operation at Fujian Union Medical College Hospital, when she was 8 months old. During the operation, she was transfused with various blood components, including blood cells and platelets. According to the investigation report by the provincial health and family planning committee, the transfusion involved eight blood donors, all tested negative at the time. But after the girl tested HIV positive last September, they re-checked the donors and found that one man was now confirmed to be HIV positive. But the question remains, why didn’t he test positive at the time? An official with the committee Yang Minhong said the man was in a “window period”, during which HIV is very difficult to be detected, but is able to be transmitted. The report also denied any responsibility from the hospital. A nurse who has been working at the hospital’s sterilization unit for 17 years also added that “there is zero chance of infection from devices.” However Maomao’s parents found the result unacceptable. They insisted on double-checking all procedural documentation from blood donation to transmission, and say they are prepared to take legal action. The government has ordered full treatment for the girl, and required the hospital to give aid to the girl’s family.
