5 years ago I had the honor of working with Talei to try and give visual justice to Mahogney Turners amazing spoken word piece created to encourage the African American community in Arizona to give themselves a better life and give their kids a brighter, healthier future. The challenges that face poorer communities today strongly reflect the imbalances that Dr. Martin Luther King spoke about years ago, they just have different names. Gentrification, Arizona tax credits for public schools, lack of commercial investment in poorer communities resulting in bad food choices, businesses that are allowed to operate that pray on poorer communities (Payday loans, check cashing services, rent to own stores), arresting people for victimless crimes that result in a lifetime struggle for gainful employment which leads to reliance on government programs and keeps generations of families in a cyclical pattern. The list goes on and on. If your one of the people liking/sharing/commenting on things disguised to seem like they are helping the community but are really there to intimidate the poorer communities (drug testing welfare recipients is a great example, calling out the EBT program for allowing the card to be used for hot meals at fast food places, which is only allowed for people who dont have access to a stove or something to cook food, aka homeless, not all EBT program members), prepare to get an education from me on the topic. #MLK2015 #MLK
