"#5 – MASS MEDIA: Disinformation, Manipulation, Propaganda, Mind Control The Invisible Government uses the mass media to control us. The term “mass media” is multifaceted. Here we’ll use it to describe the following two forms of media: -News Media (TV news, newspapers, magazines) -Television (shows, sports, commercials) TV NEWS MEDIA The main national networks, NBC, CBS, and ABC, as well as most ...if not all of the smaller cable channels, are owned, funded, and controlled by an interconnected network of large corporate conglomerates and international banking interests, which manipulate and filter out news that does not fit their corporate agenda. “One of the intentions of corporate-controlled media is to instill in people a sense of disempowerment, of immobilization and paralysis. Its outcome is to turn you into good consumers. It is to keep people isolated, to feel that there is no possibility for social change.” —David Barsamian, Journalist, Publisher “The media serve the interests of state and corporate power, which are closely interlinked, framing their reporting and analysis in a manner supportive of established privilege and limiting debate and discussion accordingly.” — Noam Chomsky, American linguist and US media and foreign policy critic The U.S. Media is dominated by 6 huge global corporations. These 6 corporations rule the newspapers, television, and radio: 2009 revenues: $157 billion General Electric media-related holdings include a minority share in television networks NBC and Telemundo, Universal Pictures, Focus Features, 26 television stations in the United States and cable networks MSNBC, Bravo and the Sci Fi Channel. GE also owns 80 percent of NBC Universal. On January 18, 2011 the Federal Communications Commission approved Comcast’s take-over of a majority share of NBC-Universal from General Electric. However, General Electric still has a 49% ownership stake in NBC-Universal. 2009 revenues: $36.1 billion The Walt Disney Company owns the ABC Television Network, cable networks including ESPN, the Disney Channel, SOAPnet, A&E and Lifetime, 277 radio stations, music and book publishing companies, production companies Touchstone, Miramax and Walt Disney Pictures, Pixar Animation Studios, the cellular service Disney Mobile, and theme parks around the world. 2009 revenues: $30.4 billion News Corporation’s media holdings include: the Fox Broadcasting Company; television and cable networks such as Fox, Fox Business Channel, National Geographic and FX; print publications including the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post and TVGuide; the magazines Barron’s andSmartMoney; book publisher HarperCollins; film production companies 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures and Blue Sky Studios; numerous websites including MarketWatch; and non-media holdings including the National Rugby League. 2009 revenues: $25.8 billion Time Warner is the largest media conglomerate in the world, with holdings including: CNN, the CW (a joint venture with CBS), HBO, Cinemax, Cartoon Network, TBS, TNT, America Online, MapQuest, Moviefone, Warner Bros. Pictures, Castle Rock and New Line Cinema, and more than 150 magazines including Time, Sports Illustrated, Fortune, Marie Claire and People. 2009 revenues: $13.6 billion Viacom holdings include: MTV, Nickelodeon/Nick-at-Nite, VH1, BET, Comedy Central, Paramount Pictures, Paramount Home Entertainment, Atom Entertainment, and music game developer Harmonix. Viacom 18 is a joint venture with the Indian media company Global Broadcast news. 2009 revenues: $13 billion CBS Corporation owns the CBS Television Network, CBS Television Distribution Group, the CW (a joint venture with Time Warner), Showtime, book publisher Simon & Schuster, 30 television stations, and CBS Radio, Inc, which has 130 stations. CBS is now the leading supplier of video to Google’s new Video Marketplace. The purpose of this ownership is to control public opinion. TELEVISION Television itself has become the great indoctrination tool of our age, and one of the greatest indoctrination tools ever devised. Television has changed human perception as well as the whole cultures of nations. Most of your ideas and opinions and the things you emulate and mimic come from Television, though you probably don’t realize it. Television is power. Television is hypnosis. Television is propaganda. Television is being used to condition you. When watching, your mind becomes open to suggestion. Your opinions are shaped. Your patterns of thinking are formed, already neatly packaged for you. Your perception of reality is molded. You are told what to think, not how to think. You are told what is important, rather than looking inside yourself to see what “YOU” feel is important. You are told what is relevant. What to believe. How to speak, what phrases to use, and how to say what and when. Public opinion in general is engineered through television, because you follow the “herd” instinct for fear of standing alone. Billions are spent on TV advertising precisely because the messages “reach” you, and reach you with a vengeance! Sure, TV advertising exists also so you can buy individual products sold mostly by the big corporations (i.e., Do you or anyone you know have enough money to advertise on the “big” networks? Of course not!).But besides this there’s also a deeper programming going on here; a programming that also seeks to target America’s children. American children watch four hours of television daily on average. Unfortunately, most of this programming is violent or dumbed-down. Studies show this causes greater aggressiveness in children, and greater stupidity; children become “immune” or numb to the horror of violence, imitate the violence they observe on TV, and gradually accept violence as a way to solve problems. This is because creating a “confused,” “mal-adjusted” and “dumbed down” American child also seems to be on the agenda of the Invisible Government. Having a divided and less intelligent public makes their job of dominion and imperial control much easier. At least one study shows that fast-paced TV shows like Sponge Bob are to blame. Fast-paced cartoons like Sponge Bob confuses kids. Researchers chose “SpongeBob” for its frenetic pace: The show switches scenes on average every 11 seconds, as compared with PBS cartoon (public television) which switch only twice a minute. “After watching the programs, the preschoolers were asked to do four different “executive function” tasks that test cognitive capability and impulse control, such as counting backwards, solving puzzles , and delaying gratification by waiting to eat a tasty snack until told to do so. Compared with those who were drawing and those watching PBS, the “SpongeBob” kids performed significantly worse on the tasks, the researchers said.” —Lauren Effron And then, of course, there are shows like The Real Housewives, Bridalplasty, Who Wants To Marry A Millionaire, and so on. Children watch these shows and believe the people who appear on them are normal. Unfortunately, today these types of people are indeed normal, because American culture and society has devolved so quickly. However, anyone with self-respect and dignity knows in their mind and feels in their heart that the Jerry Springer Show dehumanizes humanity. Same with Maury Povich, Steve Wilkos, and the rest. These images are poison to us, mentally, physically, spiritually. All of us are too good for Jerry Springer. All of us, even the people who appear on the shows. These programs debase humanity by glorifying the basest of human nature and human instinct, the animal part of us, our lowest qualities. Why not glorify the highest in humans, instead of the lowest, and let’s see what heights we might reach?" - Richard Clarke
