***50 BEST MOVIE REMAKES*** #28- Scent Of A Woman (1992) (Original version Profumo di Donna released in 1974) Al Pacino finally won his first and, thus far, only Best Actor Oscar statuette for his performance as Lt. Col. Frank Slade in the 1992 movie, a drama about a blind man who, accompanied by his young aide (Chris ODonnell) jet to New York City for a weekend of luxury, high-spending jollies and womanising before the retired colonel plans to remove his brains with a pistol. The original film was similarly themed, taking place in several Italian cities between Turin & Naples. The main difference between the two films is of the supporting character played by Chris ODonnell in the remake and Alessandro Momo in the original. In the original film, the character was a young army cadet who accompanied the blind officer, whilst the remake saw ODonnell a playing student at a prestigious school who takes up the job to make some money over the Thanksgiving break. Theres also a subplot involving the young student witnessing some unbecoming behaviour on campus and faces expulsion should he not confess what he saw, culminating in a courtroom-style showdown which gives Al Pacino even more opportunity to flex his acting muscles. Some may say the Oscar win was a sympathetic choice, since Pacino had yet to win despite being nominated for brilliant performances in The Godfather films, Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon, but it was still, in my opinion, a thoroughly deserved win. The film also won three awards, including Best Film, at the Golden Globe awards.
