50 years ago.... 20 years ago, even with a family history, our school district still resisted testing my son. I had been asking since kindergarten. I was advised by the Special Ed teacher to take him to our pediatrician for a referral to a private psychologist since he stopped working in the classroom and was found crying in the hall after being disciplined by the teacher in front of the class (he was given a suspension for 1 day because he did not go to sit in another classroom) ... After our psychologist confirmed his dyslexia, the district started the evaluation. Dylexia, discalculia, disgraphia and he was started in resource...My daughter was tested at the start of 2nd grade... dyslexia and discalculia. the resource teacher said that they wait for a child to FAIL for 2 years... Since I was working with him intensely to complete work and study....he never had failed........ WHAT is wrong with our educational system???? A doctor or nurse would be sued for this kind of misdiagnosis. The problem is that they have a monopoly in the use of public funds and testing and special ed teachers cost money so the kids lose... We invested $35K in private tutoring for our kids... Our son has an AA degree and is working towards his BA in Business Admin... Our daughter is graduating with honors in December with a BA in Psychology...Our family made that happen, not the public school system who fails so many people with LD. Constant resistence to IEP accommodations in K-12... My son graduated in 2006, my daughter in 2008. My son used the ADA College accommodations ....no problem. Notetakers, extra time...tutoring. Budget cuts in CA Community college stopped individual, but there is group tutoring..... Why are K-12 educators so out of touch... it is almost like 50 years ago.
