50 years ago today, I was in English class in a Henderson, Nevada classroom. It was the last class before lunch and the door burst open. Our English teacher whirled to face the intruder who had dared interrupt his class. The civics teacher, a giant of a man, was standing in the doorway. The English teacher, a small, sissified man who ruled the class with a quiet, yet sharpened tongue, asked, May I help you? in a voice dripping with ice. His English class was sacred. Civics teacher bent down, whispered in his ear. English snapped to Civics--get me a radio...and the giant scurried to obey. The President has been shot in Dallas and may be seriously injured. As soon as we get a radio, we will have updates. We just sat in stunned silence until they got a radio tuned in. By the time the lunch bell rang, I knew hed been hit and was hurt. Supposedly the Vice President was shot in the shoulder..(misinformation)...I started to the car to go home for lunch...huge, multi-level parking lot..As I started down to second level, a v-shaped formation of fighter jets from the nearby air force base came screaming across the sky, flying low, and the lead plane spiraled off and left the group..They were so low, I imagined I could feel the wind whipping as they flew overhead. As I watched them disappear, I saw the huge school flag moving downward. I knew then that it was real and those 2 cute little kids were fatherless and we were in chaos.
