#5051 ‘Constant Vigilance!’ Might be two words that people in Xavier’s associate with harry potter but for me Mohite uncle kind of personified it. “ ID kuthe ahe rey?” , “ Keep youaaar ID around youaar neck!” (in the funniest yet strictest accent) “Kya kaam hai andar? “ , “ID ghar pe bhool gaya? Pant aur purse kyu nahi bhool gaya?” well these are the questions that most people associate uncle with, but no one will disagree that he was one of the coolest and funniest staff members that Xavier’s has ever known. Ask ETC those guys would know. The first time I met him was during my constant trips to college for my admission. “Kya kaam hai ?” asked the sharp looking balding guy at the reception gate. Don’t be fooled by the regular looking watchman uniform, this guy was a veteran, catching students without IDs trying to give him the slip or busting outsiders making stupid alibies to enter the fortress he’s been guarding since lord knows when. Its obvious he started recognizing me cause I used to come every day begging college for a seat and eventually he started asking me “Kaam ho gaya ?” and would occasionally add “Ho jayega tension mat le” with a smile. Kaam ho gaya and college bhi chalu ho gaya and with time “Kya kaam hai?” became “Good Maarning” , “Kya bolta hai dost” (with a wide smile) . Then came fist bumps and Hi 5s and small talk every morning (8 baje ka lecture conveniently ignored). But I never thought I’d be Hi 5ing him, randomly giving him a hug , making jokes and pulling each other’s legs or just chatting with him inside the campus. Neither did I ever figure out why he called me Nasiruddin Shah . and how can I forget “Kyu rey half chaddi me kyu aaya college? Allowed nahi hai.” Once he asked me why I wasn’t regular in the past 2 weeks and on finding out about my illness all he said was “Tu khana kha ache se. Desi ande khane ka, ek dum fit ho jayega. Mai lata hai tere liye ghar se.” The next day uncle ji forced me to have lunch with him “Bhindi laya dabbe me, sath me khate hain . Kya bolta hai Nasiruddin Shah?” Trust me that means a lot to an out station student . One evening while waiting back in college (I had a late night train to Delhi) he sat with me for more than an hour just talking about his village and family and asking me about mine, which eventually ended with him saying “Tu ganpati pe ghar aja”. “Haan pakka ata hu na uncle” I said. But I’ll never be able to do that now. Something I was looking forward to. Every time during vacations or holidays I was asked the same question by him “Goa kabhi ja raha hai re? Apna quota mat bhool ;)” (widest smile ever!) I would always say “Pakka uncle no tension.” These are just a few of the innumerable memories I have of Mohite uncle. I don’t know about anyone else but for me he was this chiller guy who cared about me and helped me out a lot (trust me ), who shouted at me n made the wittiest comments when I wore my jeans too low waist, who made me sit next to him and cracked jokes and most of all treated me like a son and gave me gyaan about life. One of our last conversations ended with me asking “pass out hone ke baad wapis aaunga tho andar jane doge ? Ya bahar rok ke ID mangoge ?” to which he replied “ Tu bas khali bata mujhe kaun rokta hai tujhe. Tu mera hi bacha hai yar”. For every student admission to Xavier’s started with Mohite uncle giving you admission into college first. “Mai andar jane nahi doonga tho form kaise bharega bantai?” he used to say with a chuckle . He was and always will be the beginning to every day of a xavierites college life , the fierce yet chilled guardian of a world that will never be the same without him for me and many others . Years of dedicated service and the respect and love of generations of xavierites to his credit, Mohite uncle has created this void that I don’t know how the college will ever fill up. I’ll miss him every time I walk through the college gates and I hope others had some unforgettable memories with him like the ones I will always cherish. I’m not sure about anyone else but I heard it from him the first time before it became viral and it has a special meaning for me now……… “YOLO! Yane ki , you only liuve once” Mohite Uncle. Miss you sir ji. A student who always forgot his ID card. Admin D: :(
