51st wedding anniversary today. Photo taken at Berean Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Simple reception, not catered - cake, punch, & mints. Some of the church ladies helped serve. Invited entire congregation from both of our churches. Church was packed (I think ours was the first wedding in the new sanctuary). Jim was in AF in TX - not even one year; I had just finished 1 1/2 years at Cedarville College, a small Baptist college in Cedarville, Ohio - now a university. Elaine was maid of honor, and Brenda Faye Jordan Winnick, was bridesmaid. They were both in summer school (the reason for the wedding date). My baby sister, Debbie, and Jims baby sister, Helen, were Junior bridesmaids. The seamstress who made the gown for Dianne Nunnallys wedding made my gown and tiara for $100. A friend from church made the bridesmaids dresses for $5 each. I had turned 21 in July, and Jims 22nd birthday was the following November. I paid for the entire wedding myself from my savings, with the exception of the flowers (my stepfather knew the florist). We were dirt-poor. Our honeymoon was a 5-day drive to Abilene, TX, in his 57 Chevy - stripped-down model. Didnt even have sun visor on passenger side. All my clothes were in a foot-locker on the roof. Wedding gifts were in the back seat. Jim had rented a one-bedroom walk-through for $50 a month. His bi-monthly take-home pay was $17. Took about two months for my $100 monthly allotment to start, because we didnt have the marriage license when we got there. Abilene was a rude-awakening for a girl who had lived in Richmond all her life - tumbleweeds, & the few trees were 5-ft high max . We were there four more years. Jim put in for an overseas assignment just to get out of there and was transferred to Panama, CZ, which was a wonderful assignment. Our firstborn, Kent, was born in Abilene and our second son, David, in Panama. We were there four years and then were transferred to Alexandria, VA, when David was 6-weeks old.
