52 Weeks of Stewardship - Jan. 26, 2015 Joshua 24 Devotion Submitted by Dave Ekimoff Joshua 24:15 - “Now if you are unwilling to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” My understanding of stewardship is fairly simple and straightforward. Everything we have is from God and we have nothing on our own. In response to these gifts, we are called to give back to God. While this might be easy to understand intellectually, it is difficult to do, particularly in our society today. This verse from Joshua is a reminder to me and my family that we need to be sure about which “gods” we are serving. While I have never been challenged to follow the gods beyond the river or the gods of the Amorites, there are many other gods calling. Trying to be a faithful father and helping my family grow spiritually has been challenging with so many activities asking for a portion of my time, talent and treasure. It has been very easy for me to get caught up spending my time and money to support my family in very worthwhile activities such as helping at school events, being a scout leader, or coaching sports. It is at the times when all these things are urgently calling me that I am reminded of Joshua’s counsel. We need to put God first and then find the time and money for all the other activities after that. It certainly isn’t easy and many of those around you won’t understand your decisions but you and your family will be blessed for deciding to serve the Lord. Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for all the ways that you have blessed me, my family and all the families at Immanuel. Help us to remember that all we have comes from you and guide us in faithfully sharing our gifts. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen
