“54.5 % of 6,504 emergency nurses experienced physical violence and/or verbal abuse from a patient and/or visitor during the past week, according to a study by ENA.” Workplace violence is an increasingly recognized safety issue in the healthcare community. Workplace violence is defined by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health as any physical assault, threatening behavior, or verbal abuse occurring in the workplace. ENA and the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) today jointly released Guiding Principles on Mitigating Violence in the Workplace to systematically reduce lateral and patient and family violence in healthcare facilities. The guiding principles provide a framework for nurse leaders to identify risk factors for violence and the steps needed to ensure the safety of healthcare workers and patients. In addition, ENA and AONE will be releasing a toolkit in April 2015 that provides nurse leaders with a step-by-step approach to reducing all types of workplace violence.
