58 years ago today, Elvis made the first of three appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show~ Sullivan had previously announced that he would NEVER have an act like his on the show, but ratings prevailed, and Sullivan offered Elvis a record $50,000 for 3 shows. Ed was sick the day of the show so he had Charles Laughton fill in. Elvis performed Dont be Cruel, Love Me Tender, Ready Teddy & Hound Dog, but was only shown from the waist up, due to his scandalous swivel hipped performance on The Milton Berle Show a few months earlier. A record 54 million viewers~ which was 83% of the Nations Televisions , were tuned in for this event. The next day pre-orders for Love Me Tender started rolling in, causing the release of the single to be pushed up several weeks...
