5ACS RAAF Darwin River Quarry Lineup 1959 The RAAF Darwin River Quarry was established to supply blue metal for the construction of 11/29 the then new airstrip at RAAF Darwin. Located near Darwin River Dam the quarry closed in the early sixties. A rare photo of fifty of the members of the 5ACS Darwin River Quarry. This photo opportunity would have been held in the morning before the first of two shifts had begun work. The three better dressed people in the middle rear were Warrant Officer Snow Bamback, Works Supervisor, Flight Lieutenant Poonah Myers, Commanding Officer and Pilot Officer Bird Watcher Warner, assistant to the C.O. ~>>>> I wonder where they are all now? My dad Robert Nicholson is 4th on the left standing and yes he use to tell me about their so called uniforms - get a new shirt, rip off the sleeves straight away. Could you imagine if any Defence personnel did that today??? Oh the things they got away with.
