6/18/2013 The surgical and village teams left the hotel this morning about the same time. The surgical team arrived at the clinic about 9:15. The village team made a stop at three ATMs (trouble finding one that worked), two supermarket (for lunch supplies), the clinic to pick up additional medications and mosquito nets before we started to the village. Because of the recent rains, there was much discussion about the roads and if the vans could make it down them. Pastor Moses and the district offered us a 14 passenger land cruiser that became a pick up truck and finally just the vans and a land rover. The vans started out but did not get far before one was stuck in the mud. After trying pushing and pulling by the men, they finally resorted to using one van to pull the other out of the mud. Meanwhile, all the village workers from Kanginima and mercy trips stood on the road and tried to stay out of the mud. We finally arrived at the fishing village by 12:30pm. We had two very small rooms in which to work: one for the providers and one for pharmacy. The pharmacy room was not as wide or as long as the van in which we traveled. It was a challenge for all! But at the end of the day, we had treated 735 patients and with preventative treatments we saw a total of 1283 patients between 12:45 and 5pm! Surgery team completed five successful surgeries, even with doing a horrible recurrent hernia that turned from a spinal to a general anesthetic, they managed to complete all of the scheduled patients that presented today. What a blessed day! What is your favorite thing you have seen? My favorite thing I have seen was a mother bend down and pick up her baby and lean over and wrap him to her back using two different blankets. It was a precious sight to see. BJ All the big smiles from the children when you give them a treat. Anthony The eagerness and spirit of the people as they anticipate the help they will receive. It is evident by their eyes. Gloria Youngblood The stark differences between Congo and Uganda, to be adjacent countries. Jim Huston The Congo was probably the coolest thing because of the unique diversity and eye opener it presented! Evelena McCutcheon The favorite thing I saw today was the paved road at the end of the day! Christine Enjoyed walking to downtown Karabuta for a cold soda after a long day in surgery. - DrD
