6 July 2013 MEDIA STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: RESOLUTIONS OF THE CONGRESS NATIONAL COMMITTEE AFTER AN EXTRAORDINARY SITTING OF THE CNC ON SATURDAY 6 JULY 2013 AT THE MANNAH EXECUTIVE GUEST LODGE IN KEMPTON PARK, JOHANNESBURG. The Congress National Committee (CNC) of the Congress of the People (COPE) met for an extraordinary sitting on Saturday 6 July 2013 at the Mannah Executive Guest Lodge in Kempton Park, Johannesburg. There was a single item on the agenda namely a memorandum received from five members of the National Office Bearers (NOB). The CNC resolved to reject the memorandum in its entirety. The CNC reaffirmed the decisions it took during the meeting of 8-9 July 2013. The meeting noted a letter presented by the authors of the memorandum wherein they distanced themselves from the opportunistic attempt by Mbhazima Shilowa to use the memorandum in the pending case he brought against the Congress of the People which is due to resume on Tuesday 9 July 2013 in the South Gauteng High Court. The authors categorically state that the matters in the memorandum pertain to recent events and bear no relevance to legal arguments and disputes currently before the courts. The authors placed on record that no authority has been given by themselves to anybody outside the NOB to use the memorandum or the content thereof for any other purpose than the consumption of the NOB/CNC and should be regarded as inadmissible in court. It is further agreed that the authors will avail themselves to the COPE legal team to clarify their position if necessary. All members of the CNC, without exception, withdrew any statements during the meeting that were divisive in nature and not in the interest of unity. The leadership reaffirms its call for unity within the organisation and encourage all members and supporters of the party to follow the example of Ma Epainette Mbeki by ensuring their PRP membership is in good standing, as arrangements for congresses will be announced shortly after the conclusion of the case at 19 July 2013. COPE will be represented in the SGHC from Tuesday 9 July 2013 by Adv. Hilton Epstein (SC), Adv. Anthony Sawma (SC) and Adv. Ayitey Ayayee Finally, the meeting resolved that CNC members shall refrain from engaging the media on internal issues as the party will do so formally.
