6 Killed, 9 Injured In Owerri/Aba Auto crash The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than six persons were killed in a ghastly motor accident involving a 14-seater bus and a Mack truck traveling along Owerri/Aba expressway yesterday. It was learnt that the bus, which belonged to the Young Shall Grow Transport Company, with 14 occupants, was on its way to Lagos from Aba, when the incident occurred. Eyewitnesses told NAN that the bus had a head on collision with the truck, which was trying to overtake another truck along the Owerri-Aba Expressway at Agbala near Owerri in Imo. They said that the driver of the bus was on top speed and could not maneuver out of the road because of the ditch dug by the side of the road by a construction firm handling the dualisation of the road. They added that immedi¬ately the accident occurred the driver of the Mack truck sim¬ply escaped from the scene. An eyewitness, Emeka Ajoku, who is an indigene of Agbala, blamed the accident on the construction company handling the dualization of the road, stating that “if the contractors had not dug ditches on the sides of the road, the accident could have been avoided as the bus driver would have veered off the road to save himself and the passengers. “It is the construction company handling this project that is to be blamed for this terrible accident that claimed the lives of many passengers.” “The bus driver tried to dodge the truck yet the truck still rammed into the bus and pushed it,” he said. Another eyewitness further narrated that the incident, which occurred yesterday morning at about 8.15a.m, saw many sympathizers trying to rescue the victims after the accident before the arrival of the FRSC personnel. According to the eyewitness account, the driver of the bus died along five other passengers of the bus, with survivors of the incident all in critical condition.
