Cons: The financial burden of these events may decrease available resources to address more urgent national problems. --- People are divided on the issue of hosting international sporting events such as the Olympic Games or the Fifa World Cup. While some consider it advantageous to host such events, there are many who believe that it is detrimental for the host country and its residents. Perhaps the most important benefit of hosting these international events is the financial gain and business opportunities for the country involved. The popularity of these events inevitably sees a sharp increase in inbound tourism, both during the period of the event, as well as potentially afterwards, as the sporting sites often become cultural landmarks that continue to attract foreigners for many years to come. Other significant sources of revenue come from sponsorship fees, media broadcast rights, advertising, ticket sales and merchandise. Local businesses also thrive during this period, as the massive influx of tourists significant broadens their usual consumer base. Hosting these events can also be an opportunity for the host country to gain international recognition, as the high levels of media exposure during the period of these events enables the country to showcase its unique culture and history. For example, during the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, Australia’s multicultural character was a major theme throughout the games, which sought to promote knowledge and appreciation of the unique culture of the Australian Aboriginal people. On the other hand, it is also easy to identify reasons as to why hosting international sporting events may be detrimental for the countries involved. There are significant expenses involved in preparing for these events, which include major infrastructural developments such as the construction of roads, stadiums and playing fields. With limited financial resources, the host countries must reallocate resources from other areas in order to fund the costs. Such reallocation may be seen as unjust, particularly when the money could have otherwise been spent on addressing more urgent national problems, such as funding the national welfare system to support those people in need of government assistance. After considering both sides of the argument, it is clear that there are both advantages and disadvantages of hosting such sporting events.
