7 killed as Sumo plunges into river Chenab Kishtwar: In a tragic road mishap, seven persons were killed including two policemen and two others were injured when a vehicle (Sumo) in which they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell into a river at Datchen area of Kishtwar in Jammu and Kashmir. A police official said that a sumo that was travelling from Dangdooro to Kishtwar, on reaching near Pingradi, the driver of the vehicle lost the control over it resulting into the mishap. “The sumo rolled down a 350-ft deep gorge before falling into the Chenab river”, the official said, adding that almost nine passengers were in the vehicle. He said that soon after the accident, district administration officials, police, army jawans and civilians rushed to the spot and rescued the two passengers. “Both the persons were immediately rushed to nearby hospital in serious conditions”, the official said. “Five bodies were recovered from the Chenab river including a police officer Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police (ASI) Mushtaq Ahmad of Reasi and constable Mangat Ram of Datchen, Mardwar in Kishtwar”, the official said, adding that two more persons who received serious injuries were immediately shifted to nearby hospital for treatment. The search operation in retrieving the remaining bodies is still going on, the official added. (GNS)
