7 years ago today the biggest and best dog in the world, Toby, crossed the rainbow bridge due to a negligent and money hungry veterinary practice: Atwood Animal Hospital in Rhode Island. They performed major surgery for an intestinal obstruction that they promised they could handle (or else I would have taken him to Ocean State), even though they are not a 24 hr facility- knowing he would need around the clock care. They told me they would have someone there for him around the clock. At 5am a tech came in to find him dead. At 830am I received a phone call that he had passed away due to cardiac arrest and no one was there for him. To make matters worse, they would not release his body for cremation that day before I paid an over 3,000 note- even though they knew my father would be there that night with a check for them. They then had the nerve to inform me I could not have his vet and med/surg notes. I demanded them...and demanded that they photocopy them in front of me so that nothing could be covered up. I had an awful time reading what they wrote: how I was badgering them for someone to stay with him because of major surgery. How I was hysterical on the phone. How the tech or vet never stayed with him or checked in on him until he was found dead at 5am...how he died alone, without his family, in a cold crate on meds (maybe?) of cardiac arrest. Every time I think about it, my heart breaks into a million pieces. Please never take your animals to this horrible place. They killed my poor boy and brushed it off like it was nothing. They were more worried about their next dollar than the welfare of my guy. Rest in Peace Beanie Man! I love you forever! Run free and watch over us. 10/30/03-11/21/07.
