On this date: 1828 - Robert Turner of Ward, MA received a patent for his self-regulating wagon brake. 1833 - Legislation to settle child labor laws was passed in England. The legislation was called the Factory Act. 1886 - Li Hung-Chang’s chef devised a tasty dish in New York City. It satisfied both American and Oriental tastes. The delicacy was called chop suey. Who was Li Hung-Chang, you ask? He was China’s Ambassador to the United States. 1892 - Pop (Billy) Shriver (Chicago Cubs) caught a ball that was dropped from the top of the Washington Monument in Washington, DC. 1918 - The Chicago Cubs won the National League pennant with a 1-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. 1925 - After a night on the town, Babe Ruth shows up late for batting practice. Miller Huggins suspends Ruth and slaps a $5,000 fine on him for disobeying orders on the field and team rules off the field. Ruth is forced to apologize before hes reinstated nine days later. The day after his return to the lineup, Ruth hits career home run number 300. 1957 - Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina set a filibuster record in the U.S. Senate this day (and part of the previous day). He spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes. Yakety yak! 1963 - Fats Domino performed Red Sails in the Sunset on American Bandstand. This was the last weekday showing of American Bandstand. Mickey Mantle hits home run No. 447 in the opener and ties Babe Ruths career strikeout record (1,330) in the nightcap. 1967 - The final episode of The Fugitive aired. 1967 - Bert Campaneris of the Kansas City As hit three triples in a 9-8, 10-inning loss to the Cleveland Indians. 1973 - U.S. President Nixon was ordered by Judge John Sirica to turn over the Watergate tapes. Nixon refused and appealed the order. 1977 - Lou Brock got the 893rd stolen base of his baseball career -- breaking the major-league mark set by Ty Cobb. 1977 - 3 people were arrested in Memphis after trying to steal Elvis body. As a result his body was moved to Graceland. 1986 - The former American Bandstand studio was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The studio is in Philadelphia, PA. 1993 - George Brett got his 200th stolen base in Kansas Citys 5-4, 12-inning victory over Boston to join Willie Mays and Hank Aaron as the only players with 3,000 hits, 300 homers and 200 steals.
