$76 million to put suicide nets around the Golden Gate Bridge. Not only is this a complete misuse of state funds, but a perfectly tragic metaphor for how we approach these types of issues. I dont see how this is supposed to solve anything. Once a person has made the decision to end their own life, a net underneath a bridge isnt going to stop them from doing so. Just as a person whos committed to the idea of carrying out an act of violence against others isnt going to change his or her mind just because its illegal to own or carry a gun. Rather than pouring money into projects that work as band-aid solutions and/or trying to regulate our way out of this mess and infringing on our individual rights, why not address the real underlying issue and put that money into preventative measures like better mental health research (the kind that doesnt involve prescribing meds as an alternative to cognitive/behavioral therapy), or better treatment programs? The fact that we find it easier to carry out a project like this as opposed to funding research and programs that aim to prevent this type of tragedy is beyond me.
