76 years ago today, the pogroms known as Kristallnacht began throughout Germany, Austria, and the Sudeten region of Czechoslovakia. When the violence ended the next day, 267 synagogues had been burned, 7,500 Jewish businesses had been vandalized or looted, and at least 91 Jewish people were killed, with tens of thousands more sent to concentration camps. In 1938, sisters Inge and Gisella Berg lived with their families in the village of Lechenich, near Cologne, Germany.
