8.17.14 – DailyMail [Yes, in reading, automaticity of phonemes allows a child’s brain to be free to focus on reading comprehension instead of on figuring out how to pronounce the words. The same thing holds true in math. When the math facts become automatic, a child’s brain can then focus on doing the actual math calculation. MRI brain studies have shown these same findings for some years. However, it is the stubborn, hard-headed ed establishment that ignores the brain research and still preaches against “drill and kill,” phonemic awareness/decoding skills/sounding out words, and memorization of math facts through repetition. When is the public going to rise up and tell the ed establishment to get lost? Not only do children learn how to read and compute through repetition and drill; but they also learn self-discipline, personal responsibility, and a solid work ethic. Think how important those serendipities are in today’s world! -- Donna Garner] dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2727268/Peek-brain-shows-kids-learn-math-skills.html#ixzz3Al7FHRBo “Now it all adds up!
