8 Stories To Light Up 8 Hanukkah Nights, 4th Candle : This year has not been easy for Israel but even in the face of terror and tragedy, we unite as a family and remember that we are never alone. Max Steinberg, an American from Southern California, came to Israel and joined the IDF. In Israel, soldiers with no family in the country are called lone soldiers, but when Max fell in Operation Protective Edge, over 30,000 Israelis who had never met Max, came to show his family that no soldier is ever alone, his family is not alone – we are their family. After being in Israel, and seeing all the love and support, and how he is truly remembered here, we decided Max needed to stay in Israel. No longer the lone soldier, forever at his home said his mother at her sons funeral. We concluded that the Israeli people would honor him for his sacrifice and provide him with the lasting respect he deserves – mission accomplished.
