80s Flashback: Back to the second week of December of 1988, when this hit was at #14 on the U. S. pop chart. It is from Bobbys second solo studio album, Dont Be Cruel. After recording sessions for the album were completed, Brown and producer Gene Griffin travelled to New York City, since he felt something was missing from the record. My Prerogative was written by Brown as a response to the criticism he received for his departure from New Edition. He explained the song was about making decisions in ones life and not caring about other peoples judgment. My Prerogative is often considered a new jack swing anthem. New Jack Swing, a fusion genre, mixes elements of hip hop and Urban Contemporary/R&B. The genre became a staple of the African-American club scene from the late-80s, through the mid-90s.
