846 OMANG CARDS UNCOLLECTED IN MOCHUDI Civil and National Registration department continues to experience challenges of a high number of uncollected national identity cards despite efforts made to encourage people to collect them. Addressing the Kgatleng District Council session on Monday, September 22, the Council chairperson, Mr Tona Mooketsi said in Mochudi office, there were about 846 uncollected national identity cards Omang cards. He urged councillors to encourage the electorates to collect their omang cards well on time in preparation for October 24 general elections, adding that those people without cards would not be allowed to vote. Mr Mooketsi further said there was also a low turn up for registration of births and deaths despite government’s decision to suspend penalties for late registration until next year March. On other issues, the council chairperson said as per the revised Children’s Act of 2009 Sec 121, there are about 12 operational village child protection committees in the district. He said the Act provides for the establishment of Village Child protection committees and monitors the welfare of children in their respective communities as well as educate them about child care and protection. Mr Mooketsi further said the issues of child care were dealt with efficiently, adding that 12 cases had been reported, of which two are for child abuse, two for adoption, and eight for child custody. He also cited a challenge of indiscriminate cutting of trees and illegal collection of fire wood in the district. Mr Mooketsi said the affected areas are Bodungwane, Kgomodiatshaba and Khurutshe for morukuru while Ramotlabaki was hard hit by illegal firewood collection. He encouraged members of the communities to apply for permits for easy management of natural resources and to use alternative sources of energy. The department of forestry and range resources was engaged in different activities supporting conservation and management of forest and range resources, he said. It has also launched the national symbols on the flora side which are historically and culturally attached to Batswana’s daily lives. Mr Mooketsi stated that different plant species were selected, Morula, Motsikiri, and Sengaparile as national tree, grass and flower respectively.
