85 years ago this day Hoagy Carmichael, with Mills Hotsy Totsy Gang, struck an oddly compelling note with his two-in-one-tempoed suite in miniature called Barbaric. The first minute or so goes by in a white hot sizzle of Ellingtonesque jungleisms, then the tempo divides abruptly, giving out with a deep purple, elegiac cry of a melody, first throaty, then tender. The latter theme would become a minor hit as In the Still of the Night, which, in title at least, inspired Cole Porter. This is played thru-the-air on a 1929 RCA Electrola.
