President of Evanston Ladies’ College, first dean of women for Northwestern University’s Women’s College (1873). Second national president of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (1874); presented “Home Protection” petition of 100,000+ women to U.S. legislature (1879). First president of the National Council of Women (1888).
