9/29/14 DR. MONTALVAN’S FAUX PAS ON NOYNOY’S FAUX PAS ON NORA’S FAUX PAS. In his Kris-Krossing Mindanao column on page A-17 of today’s Philippine Daily Inquirer, Dr. Antonio J. Montalvan details the arduous deliberations and process in the selection of a national artist for which nora aunor should not have been excluded from this year’s batch. He then speculates on the reasons for the snub. He writes: “Was it Nora’s personal life that Mr. Aquino feels may not provide for a good role model for Filipinos? There is irony there. Mr. Aquino only needs to look at his own family backyard.” This may be permissible since the statement is hypothetical. Apprarently, the writer is referring to the reported, if not publicly known, improprieties of certain relatives of Noynoy. But, then, none of these relatives are being recommended for the National Artist Award, for which public funds would be disbursed as pensions during the lifetime and pompous burial ceremonies upon the death of the honoree. Dr. Montalvan was very categorical in stating the reason to be that“Nora Aunor was stricken off the list because she campaigned for Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in the previous presidential elections. Remember the so-called mole-on- the-face look alike?”. How did Dr. Montalvan come to know that this was indeed the reason? There must be a factual basis for this, otherwise the statement might just be dinoktor. And. So far as I can remember the mole-on-the face look alike was diminutive lady comedian. Meron pa nga bakla na look alike. Lest I be accused of being a pnoy booster or a nora basher, I support the criticism against the retention of certain cabinet secretaries and the endorsement of a presidential candidate. My aunt Aurelia (as in Aunor) who would buy all the magazines at that time which had aunor on their cover and my cousin Vivian (as in Villamayor) who would skip her classes just to line up daily outside the gate of nora’s la vista residence would have crucified me had I not exhibited the same passion for nora, not to mention that a lot of people snickered at that time that I resembled Tirso Cruz, although in a pejorative sense, or Vic Sotto for that matter. Since columnist and opinion makers (the column is at the opinion page of the paper) wield a tremendous influence in moulding the minds of the readers, they should be careful in their statement of facts, that they state only the truth and nothing but the truth. While discredit must be given where discredit is due, the opinions for these must be based on facts, otherwise these would mislead. If the aforecited reason was indeed the reason, then this post is a misstep on my part for which I would like to pass my profoundest fatawad faux.
