9-year-old Louis Armstrong was one of six boys arrested for being dangerous and suspicious characters. He was sent to the Colored Waifs Home, where he later learned to play the trumpet. Documents from the Colored Waifs Home, a facility off City Park Avenue for troubled and orphaned children where Armstrong famously began to play the horn in 1913, have never before been seen in public. The records, in turn, have led to the discovery of long-lost newspaper stories about him before he was even a teenager. Together the fragments reveal previously unknown details about Armstrongs early years, altering the course of a legend that he himself helped create.
