90% of what Ive seen on my newsfeed has made me proud to be Australian in the last few days. Sadly, a couple of days ago, I watched some people (whom I can only describe as complete morons) suggest that if the folk trapped in the Sydney cafe had guns they could have prevented the 2 deaths of innocent people. I hoped those folk would be ignored for the press seeking idiots that they were but unfortunately... Id like to think that over the last few years I have learned to chill and be less aggravated by fools, but Ive seen the argument taken up by a dim witted Aussie politician and it is getting airtime from sensible news organisations and not just twits like some of the Americans on Fox News. When the Sydney siege first hit the airwaves, Mash and I both commented, Wow. Cant remember the last time I heard about gun use like this in Australia. See we dont walk our streets with the fear that a total tool may have a bad day and decide that using their concealed weapon of death might b a good way to make their day a little brighter. If we are frustrated we yell, get a bit grumpy, write a letter or find another fairly safe way to vent our annoyances. (Yep, we often drown our sorrows in drink, but thats another discussion for another day.) We dont live in fear of our police because we know most of them have never shot their gun at a human and they would be far more likely to chat to a crim or maybe pull out a taser if totally necessary. The suggestion that the average Australian would feel safer if they could pull out their gun in a cafe is plain stupid. We are not a country of victims as David Leyonhjelm has suggested. We are a country of passionate but generally fun loving and peaceful citizens that do not need to base their understanding of self defence on an archaic Constitution that has encouraged its collection of states to be ruled by the NRA. As this ridiculous man gets air time, I encourage folk to view the John Oliver YouTube trilogy on Aussie gun laws that I posted a year or so ago - https://m.youtube/playlist?list=PLOKWcH1zBl2kfnCwyyZWk5MW28lgaNa7L It brings a humorous but meaningful grouping of comments to the discussion. I love my American friends but I will do close to anything rather than see my country walk their countrys path of self destruction.
