94 - World cup USA 94 was the first world cup where a win in the group stages was worth 3 points instead of the previous 2 points in order to promote offensive play. This created quite a few scares in the group stage. Of particular note was Italys group E. The group consisted of Mexico, Ireland, Italy, and Norway. All 4 teams finished with 4 points. Italy qualified despite being the 3rd place team in the group due to having scored 1 more goal than Norway. This group is the only group in World Cup history in which all four teams finished with the same points. Italy went on to face Brazil in the finals where they lost in penalty kicks after Roberto Baggio kicked a penalty way over the goal. Baggio had been unquestionably the best player of this world cup having led Italy in all of their elimination round games scoring 5 goals in 3 games. This is the only time the final has been a scoreless draw, and only one of two times the finals has gone to penalties (2006 was the other one).
