A Black-footed Albatross found entangled in latex balloons & cotton string was collected by BeachCOMBER volunteers during a monthly beach survey at Zmudowski State Beach in California. The death of this beautiful bird could have been easily prevented. The balloon industry claims that latex balloons with cotton string, such as these, are "safe" to release. This is obviously untrue. Much respect to the Oikonos Ecosystem Knowledge scientists who collaborate with the BeachCOMBERS program to research & document plastic ingestion & marine debris entanglement cases.
