A CASE FOR THE 4-1-2-1-2 DIAMOND FORMATION: It will be interesting to see what formation Van Gaal selects in Sundays big clash against our bitter old rivals Liverpool. In fact, Van Gaal has used a different formation in every game in the 5 consecutive wins we have had. But here is why he should employ a 4-1-2-1-2 diamond formation particularly against Liverpool. Defensive frailties cost Liverpool the title last season. In fact, no team has ever conceded more than 50 goals and went on to win the title ever since the BPL was founded in 1992. And this season is no different as they are struggling in that department. Away from home, only QPR (17) and Leicester City (14) have conceded more goals than Liverpool (13). They also seem to encounter more problems against opponents who deploy 2 strikers instead of 1. Against teams that have deployed 1 striker, they have played 11 games and conceded 10 goals. Thats 1.1 goals conceded per game. Against teams that have deployed 2 strikers, they have played 4 games and conceded 9 goals. Thats 2.25 goals conceded per game. Why is this so?? When a center forward pairing (Falcao and RVP/Rooney/Di Maria) occupy both central defenders, excellent communication and positioning is required from the whole defensive unit. With 2 strikers on the pitch, one is able to make runs in between the two centerbacks while the other one roams around the edge of the box to take on long shots. In fact, we have scored 7 goals from outside the box this season, 2 more than any other team....... #kenneth_nicholas
