A CHURCH RAISED UP “Come, O house of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the Lord” Isaiah 2:5 The following experience, told by an Italian worker, demonstrates the fact that there is power in the Word of God. Mr Crescimone lives in Sicily. One day he bought some shoe nails to repair his own shoes, and when he got home, he noticed that the sheet of paper in which the nails were wrapped was a page of a religious book. As he was impressed by its first reading, he read it over and over again until he discovered it was a page of the Bible. He did not know what the Bible was but so thirsty to know the truth that he looked for a Bible everywhere, until at last he found one at the shop of a blacksmith. The blacksmith let him borrow it. Each evening after work he read until late at night. His wife thought he was going crazy. But as he continued reading the Word of God, he was becoming a changed man. He read it all within six months and thus found the truth. The Sabbath, health reform, and tithing all became a part of his beliefs, although he did not know there were people who were following these doctrines. Some weeks later, Angelo Bognandi began to canvass at Niscemi, and there he met the blacksmith who had lent the Bible to Mr Crescimone. They had a long talk together. During the conversation, the blacksmith stated that many years ago he had received the Bible from Antonino Bognandi – Brother Angelo Bognandi’s father. He also added that he had lent the Bible to a certain Mr Grescimone, nicknamed ‘the prophet,’ who was reading the Book eagerly. Brother Bognandi called at Mr Crescmone’shome, and then a scene followed that is difficult to describe. It seemed as though both of them had always known each other, and they embraced each other and called each other “brother.” Soon after this Mr Crescimone was baptized, as well as his wife, a son, and ten other persons. The Niscemi church was organized on May 23, 1948, a direct result of our literature work. Those who engage in the literature ministry and distribute our truth-filled literature have been appropriately named “literature evangelists.” These men and women who go from house to house, placing the truth of God in printed from in the hands of the people, are making a definite contribution toward evangelizing the masses. Ellen G. White tells us that these workers are “sounding the note of warning on the highways and byways to prepare a people for the great day of the Lord, which is so soon to break upon the world” (Ellen G. White, Colporteur Ministry, p. 14). Let us pray for these gospel pioneers. They are working in many countries of the world proclaiming the truth by way of the printed page. Wherever they leave literature, the printed word keeps on preaching salvation without stop. There is power in the printed word. Miracles of Grace
