A Call for a Dismantling of the Standardized Testing System in - TopicsExpress

A Call for a Dismantling of the Standardized Testing System in America: I think it is rather absurd that the only thing standing in the way from my possessing a nearly perfect graduate school application is a stupid standardized test. To begin, just like the ACT, SAT, and any other standardized test, the GRE (graduate school admittance test) does not at all measure a persons intelligence and intellect. Particularly, in my case, as a philosopher, this test can not at all assess my knowledge or competence in the field and serves only as a confidence downer for me as Im looking to enter my senior year at Morehouse College and apply to graduate school this fall. Another thing that I would like to note is the extreme way-of-thinking bias that is implicit in the very nature of this exam, as well as all regimented exams across the board. Some people just are not meant to sit down from said period of time and answer arbitrary and often mundane questions about whatever The Test Maker chooses to declare as adequate knowledge about a specific subject. Also, when you get to schools like Princeton, you find that most of the students who were accepted to the institution parents spent thousands of dollars to prepare them to take the test. Needless to say, this is EXTREMELY unfair for poorer students who cannot afford to even think about taking a class to prepare them for the test design, let alone the test preparation booklet, if they are even aware that they should prepare at all. What we deem as smart in America, whether it is a 2200 on the SAT, a 36 on the ACT, a 170 on the GRE, or a 180 on the LSAT (law school admittance test), makes me understand even more why the leaders of this country are so inherently dumb and disconnected. Their intellect does not match their test score, mostly because their test score was bought. I digress. . . . The moral of the story is simply this: Dont ever feel like youre dumb because you dont do well on a standardized test. It is highly likely that you are very well smarter than the Test Maker. . . . -Thoughts from the Ivory Tower God bless.
