A Christmas Eve Story. It has been our family tradition (most years) to get a tree on the day before Christmas. It smells good and its still fairly fresh... and its just fun to spend part of the day decorating it. This year was no different and my daughter, Kiko, and I made plans to get the tree today. There were a few things to accomplish first, though. I had a lesson with my Kempo instructor, Master Allen Horner, and then get a chiropractic adjustment. I also took Kiko to my chiropractor so she could have what turned out to be her first adjustment. She enjoyed it and said, Lets go get a tree. Her enthusiasm for getting a tree is what makes it fun. I was, however, still dressed in my uniform from my Kenpo lesson. When we got to Bachmans there was a sign proclaiming that every tree was free with a purchase. I figured the fine print was likely a minimum price like maybe 25 or 30 bucks. Well, there was no fine print. When we got in and spoke to the employee, she told us it didnt matter how much you spent, if you spent something, you got a free tree if you wanted it. I said, Okay, time to find something we can use. I looked around and spied some boughs in the corner or varying lengths. Immediately, I thought of the bo (staff) katas we learn in Kempo. Those are the fancy-looking dances that you do while twirling and striking with a long piece of bamboo. Kiko spotted a six-foot long piece of almost perfectly straight birch and I picked it up and started doing my kata... in the middle of freaking Bachmans. Part of what is cool is that our katas begin with the staff on the floor to represent that you might have to defend yourself with a stick that you find on the ground. I gave Kiko the camera and she snapped the pics that accompany this piece. The employees were amused, to say the least. While they wrapped up the tree, we went to pay for our Christmas stick. Originally, it was $6.99 but they gave it to me for half off. Thats right... a gorgeous, full 8 foot tree and a Christmas Stick for $3.67, which includes tax. Bachmans is open until 4. If you have a tree but know of a family that doesnt it might make a nice gift. Who knows?
